League of Legends’ Role Quests turn every lane into a second race. Finish yours first and you gain a role-specific reward while your opponent is still playing without theirs.

Players often call them lane quests, but Riot’s name is Role Quests. As of Patch 26.16, they are active in position-assigned Summoner’s Rift queues. Top, mid, and bot gain progress through lane actions; jungle evolves its companion; support advances World Atlas.

The system rewards playing your assigned role while giving every position a distinct way to influence the map. It also creates a new question during lane: who finishes first, and what can that player do before the other quest catches up?

## What are lane quests in League of Legends?

Top, mid, and bot earn points from minions, champion and epic monster takedowns, turret plates, and turret takedowns, plus passive time. Lane actions count more in the assigned lane, and mid also gains progress from champion damage.

Patch 26.9 made normal roams less punishing: every two minutes spent in lane banks one minute of roaming time, up to 60 seconds. Recalling still pauses passive progress for 12 seconds, and extended lane swaps slow the quest. Swiftplay and rotating modes do not use these position quests.

## Every LoL role quest reward

These are the current rewards in Patch 26.16:

- Top — Raises the level cap to 20, grants 600 XP immediately, then adds 80 XP per champion takedown and 11% XP from other sources. Teleport arrivals grant a shield worth 35% of maximum health for 10 seconds; without Teleport, you receive a seven-minute-cooldown version.

- Jungle — Fully evolves the jungle companion, raises Smite to 1,400 damage, grants movement speed in the jungle and river, and adds 10 gold and 10 XP per large monster.

- Mid — Grants a free Tier 3 boot upgrade and 8% bonus attack damage or ability power.

- Bot — Grants 300 gold, then 2 extra gold per minion and 40 extra gold per champion takedown for the rest of the game. Boots move into the quest slot, leaving six normal item slots open.

- Support — Completes the support item, adds 9 gold per 10 seconds to its final form, and lets the quest slot hold up to two Control Wards. After completion, those wards cost 40 gold each.

## Why finishing before your lane opponent matters

The reward is permanent, but the advantage of finishing first is temporary because the opponent can still complete their quest. That gap is a real power spike: one player has extra stats, income, experience, mobility, or vision while the other does not.

Treat the meter like an item breakpoint. Finish the wave, spend any new gold, then use the reward before the matchup becomes even again.

- Top can turn the immediate 600 XP into a level lead, then use the Teleport shield to arrive stronger at a cross-map fight.

- Mid can pair Tier 3 boots with 8% bonus AD or AP to push first and contest the next river play before the enemy unlocks the same reward.

- Bot can reset with the 300 gold, finish a component, and pressure dragon while the opposing carry is still short of the quest.

- Jungle can use the stronger Smite and movement speed to control an objective or invade before the enemy companion fully evolves.

- Support can establish objective vision with cheaper Control Wards and a completed item while the opposing support still has the weaker setup.

## How quests change lane and map dynamics

A good trade now attacks health and the quest clock. Denying minions or plates slows active progress, while forcing a recall pauses passive progress. A lane lead can therefore compound into an earlier permanent reward even without a solo kill.

Roaming still matters, but its timing is clearer. Push the wave, use banked roaming time, and return before an extended absence costs too much progress. The first quest finisher can export a local advantage to Dragon, Rift Herald, or the opposite side lane.

## How to play around the quest race

The meter should change your next decision, not replace good laning:

- Track both quest bars. When yours is close, plan the next wave and recall around the completion timing.

- Prefer guaranteed progress from a safe wave or plate over a low-odds chase that loses lane resources.

- When you finish first, ping the window and make a role-specific play. If the enemy finishes first, respect the temporary mismatch and secure progress toward your own reward.
