League of Legends patch 26.9 changes what “safe” looks like in solo queue. Ambessa now has a longer ultimate cast time (0.70 seconds), so more players will flash, dash, or use crowd control before it lands. Briar also loses some scaling health, so bad fights punish her harder when she is behind.

On the other side, poke and frontlines get real upgrades. Ezreal ability power ratios jump sharply, so his Q poke and R snipes hit much harder. Gragas takes less damage during W in mid and late fights, and Tahm Kench saves teammates more reliably. Teemo also gains stronger auto-attack builds for top lane duels.

What This Means for Ranked

Should you still pick Ambessa or Briar? Pick Ambessa only if your team can start fights with someone else first. Her R cast time is now 0.70 seconds, which means enemies have more time to react, so surprise kills are less reliable. With Briar, respect item leads: her lower health growth means she survives fewer extended fights, especially when she is down gold.

What should you pick more often? If you want a clear win condition in champion select, Ezreal is a better carry when your team needs long-range damage. His AP ratios are much higher now (for example, Q goes from 15% to 40% AP), so AP-focused builds punish squishy targets faster. For frontline, Gragas is harder to kill during W, and Tahm Kench can reposition an ally he devours with 60% move speed for 3 seconds, so your carry escapes more often. In top lane, Teemo benefits if you build for repeated auto attacks, because his E now scales with bonus AD.

Where do the new systems matter most? The new Sorcery keystones change lane plans: Deathfire Touch rewards repeated ability damage over time, while Stormraider’s Surge rewards dealing 25% of a target’s max health in 3 seconds with a big move speed boost. Also plan for item shifts: Opportunity is gone, Statikk Shiv is now an on-hit scaling item, and Voltaic Cyclosword now triggers Energized from abilities, which changes how some AD casters take short trades.
