How to play against Volibear

Lane and teamfight rules that hold regardless of your pick.

In lane and in teamfights

  1. Keep him out of melee range after he marks you with W. Denying the second W removes his strongest extended-trade swing.
  2. Contest early river fights only with lane priority and health. Volibear wins messy skirmishes when opponents meet him one at a time.
  3. Back away from towers before his ult turns a dive into a forced fight. Clear the wave early so he has less time to set it up.
  4. Kite him after Q is used rather than standing for the second W. Force him to spend cooldowns crossing space.
  5. Peel his first engage and reset backward. Volibear loses value when he cannot stay on one target long enough for repeated W casts.

Where Volibear is weak

Exploit these in draft and in lane.

  • Volibear depends on staying in melee long enough to repeat his bite, so disengage cuts off his sustain.
  • Volibear's engages are direct and telegraphed, making spread formations and slows punish his attempts to start fights.
